Care-related policy: Sweden

In 1997, The Knowledge Foundation and The Swedish Federation of County Councils engaged jointly in venture (ITHS 1) for developing a national platform within the health and care system. The purpose was to develop a fully covering information and communications net. The institutions put in SEK 75 million each over a 3-year period. The purpose was to enhance the quality of the health and care system, provide better healthcare, increase productivity and to lower the costs. In the year 2000 the project was prolonged (ITHS 2) and The Federation of County Councils was replaced by The Vårdal Foundation. More money, SEK 32,5 million, was poured into the project, and the new venture focused on regional cooperation, distance and elderly care. The programme aims at co-ordinating existing competence and to spot and promote relevant R&D ideas with regard to quality and efficiency by means of ICT. Furthermore, another important dimension is to enhance patient and family influence. The prospects around this venture are to develop a joint information and communications structure for the entire health and care sector in Sweden.

Although none of the ITHIS-projects have a pronounced focus on aged persons, there have been and still is subprojects with a focus on elderly.
