Policy concerning older people and IST: Portugal

Currently, ICTs are mainly used to support management processes. The potential of ICT for remote support services is not yet exploited. However, an increasing number of non-profit private Institutions providing the SAD are progressively more interested in finding how remote support services could be implemented. The Tele-alarm Service - this is a new initiative on a national level, which aims to ensure the safety and support of the elderly.

The only application with any relevance here is the Elderly Citizen Line. This is a free telephone line, which provides information to the elderly on a wide range of rights and benefits, in such important areas, as, health, social security, accommodation, equipment and services, free time. If the elderly person has any query he can ring this line and will find an interesting and attentive voice at the other end who will do everything to listen, advise and inform.

There are some training courses for older people. At national level it is important to mention that the Senior Card Foundation is being promoting several initiatives and is planning to increase the number of these initiatives and to extend them to rural areas.
