Greece has over 10 million inhabitants or 80 inhabitants per square kilometre. The level of urbanisation is low: 60,1%. Greece has a GDP of €117 billion or €11.700 per inhabitant, which is far below average to European countries. Economically, Greece is not powerful to invest in stimulation of IST, on a National level as well as on an individual level, apart from pro-active IST stimulating policy.
The national Greece ICT and Telecom industry is very underdeveloped. Also the penetration of PC's at home is very low, as is the ISDN infrastructure. From a commercial and infrastructural perspective, Greece needs a long term scheme to realise an IST market for elderly.
Rates of (mobile) telephony are average in Greece. Penetration of PC's at home is far below average. The market in general needs investments and purchases of hardware before IST services can be successfully be introduced on a lager scale. However, IST services combined with mobile phones could be successful already.
The wealth of an individual elderly person is low in Greece. Continuous education by 54-64 year old people is very low compared to other countries. Related to the low penetration of PC's this could imply low actual interest of elderly people in the current supply of IST services.
