Socio-economic environment: Finland

Finland has some 5 million inhabitants or 15 inhabitants per square kilometre. The level of urbanisation is below average, comparable with Austria, Ireland and Portugal, 76,3%.

Finland has a GDP of 121 billion Euro or 24.200 Euro per inhabitant. The GDP per head is average compared to other European countries. Economically, Finland has an average opportunity to invest in stimulation of IST, on a National level as well as on an individual level.

The national Finnish ICT and Telecom industry is very well developed. The ISDN infrastructure in Finland is average, but Finland invests in more infrastructural technologies (cable, ADL etc) that spread risk of technological dead-ends. From a commercial and infrastructural perspective, Finland can compete strongly in the IST market. Costs of telephony are high in Finland and penetration of PC's at home is high. The market is ready for IST services to be introduced.

The wealth of an individual elderly person is average in Finland. Continuous education by 54-64 year old people is average, but high compared to many other countries. Related to the high penetration of PC's this could imply high levels of knowledge and interest amongst older people in relation to the supply of IST services.
